A Few Wedding Excitments

Soon all of the Fall wedding magazines will be coming out soon. You have no idea how excited I am to start flipping through all of them to get some awesome fall inspiration.  Fall is my favorite season and of course I have to have my wedding next fall! I haven't even purchased one bridal book or magazine yet so I am making it my mission this week to do so.  Here are a few fall inspirations that I have already found and LOVED!

I love the idea of putting a lot of candles or lanterns everywhere to make it feel warm and cozy especially in the fall.

I love the rustic fall wedding feel
Apples and apple cider for the guest!!

This weekend will be a busy weekend too! Danny will be home and we are going to take some more venue tours.  We will be touring Holden Arboretum again so he and his family can see it.  Plus we will be touring Progressive Field.  For those of you not from Cleveland it's where the Cleveland Indians play baseball.  That probably sounds ridiculous to most of you but Danny and I basically started dating all because of our interest in sports and it was the end of baseball season when we first started dating.  We have gone on TONS of baseball games for our dates.  Not just baseball but all kind of sporting events, but the ones I feel like we have the most fun on are when we go to the ballpark.

I will keep you all updated on how the tour goes. But I did want to share with you some really cool wedding ideas just in case we did decide to have a ballpark wedding.  I found these a few weeks ago and I just fell in love with them!  I think even if we don't get married at the ballpark I still want to incorporate some sporty elements into the wedding. I know I am so not being a girly bride, but I'm not a super girly girl in the first place so what did you expect.  I am refusing to have the wedding during college basketball season so I won't miss a UK game and doing it in March is completely out of the question because of March Madness.  ANYWAY...here are some of the cool sporty things that got me super excited about wedding planning!

I LOVE all these cool ring pictures where the photographer tried to incorporate sporty things or foods that you typically eat at the ballpark!

I thought that was a cute little idea for a baseball themed wedding.
Tickets as escort cards! LOVE IT!

The Guestbook! All the guest sign a bat instead of a book!
LOVE this picture minus the Red Sox cloth in the background.

I would love to know how they got that personalized.  It seems like a cute and creative wedding favor.
I don't care where we get married but I have to have these for all the groomsmen! Of course they would be Cleveland Indians and not the Twins but still I think these are so perfect for the guys instead of a flower.

I think there are a lot of nice ways to incorporate sporty elements without going into the tacky or completely themed realm.  I am looking to have a nice balance of things.  I want to incorporate things Danny and I both love.  It's going to be fun figuring all that out and trying to piece things together in one cohesive and gorgeous wedding.  I can't wait!  Whatever we decide, fall garden wedding, or sporty ballpark wedding, or maybe even something completely different; I'm sure it will turn out amazing.

Maids of the Brides

Kasey (my sister and maid of honor) and I went bridesmaid dress browsing this past weekend.  I am pretty positive that it is going to take longer to find those dresses than it took to find my wedding dress.

I am trying to avoid David's Bridal since I am not really a fan of their selection.  I went to a boutique in Rocky River, that has locations nation wide, named Bella Bridesmaids.  They have a small selection and they offer designer dresses so some of them can be a little pricey.  But they are very good at letting you know all about the designers, the different variations of the dresses, and they track everything you are looking at for you.  I was very pleased with our experience there.

Kasey and I found a few that we liked but nothing really stood out and said, "I'm your dress."  I want to keep it really simple and just have everyone wear a little black dress.  That way it will look flattering on all figures and it really can be worn again since it will be black and knee length.

Has anyone ever picked their bridesmaid dresses from a department store or does everyone go to a bridal store? If you have gone the department store route I would love to hear about your experience.  You can Facebook or e-mail me or just comment on here.  If you didn't go with a department store or David's Bridal what route did you go with?

NOW time for some pictures! WARNING to all of my bridesmaids that may go shopping with me, this will happen to you too so prepare to model for my blog! Basically most of the dresses look the same.  I am kind of going for that look of a simple, structured, classic cocktail dress.  Only a few of them deviate from that idea of the simple black dress.  ENJOY! Thank you Kasey for being model number one!

Dress number one from Bella Bridesmaids. We like it, it has pockets and comes in black.
This is something I would wear mainly because of the ruffles. I don't know if Kasey was such a fan.
Simple onyx dress with pockets I think.
David's Bridal dress number one.  Pretty much like the ones from above but in a cotton fabric, I would rather have something in satin maybe.
I think when I pulled this dress we were just pulling because we weren't finding a whole lot that we liked.  This one does look good on her but it's not necessarily what I was going for.
I am on the fence about the fabric "design" that is on the sleeve to the waistline of this dress. It has a nice shape and length though.
This dress perplexes me. Will this look good on everyone because the neckline? The ruched waist is a plus though.

I am in LOVE with this!

To those of you who are planning a wedding right now, I have found one of the most helpful tools ever!  When I first started looking at venues and thought about a budget I was trying to find a way to organize the tons of information that I was being bombarded with.  I looked and looked online for something that would make this easier and I couldn't find anything that was an all in one kind of tool.  Then I found this.

Google documents has an all-in-one wedding planner! It is amazing!!  The planner is filled with spreadsheets that help you organize your venues, all your vendors, guest list, seating chart, and it even gives you itineraries and check lists to help you track all the tons of information you will need to plan out your wedding.

I have been putting together a guest list.  I can put all my guest and who they will bring, their addresses, e-mails, whether or not I have sent invitations to them, if they have dietary restrictions, and if they are apart of the wedding party or rehearsal dinner.  The guest list spreadsheet is amazing!

The venue spreadsheet is awesome too.  You are able to put all the contact information for the venue such as the website, the coordinator's name, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, whatever you need.  Also, you can track the capacity, cost, parking, or what you think is important to know about your future venue.  It is so helpful.

Here is the link to this amazing tool:

I highly recommend it!

Holden Arboretum Tour

Wedding planning has finally started to get real.  I went on my first venue tour!

Danny and I (mainly Danny) have been emailing venues for about two weeks and it is getting crazy how full our in-boxes are now.  Picking out a venue is a very overwhelming process.  We know it needs to be done soon because we are discovering that there are people that are already booking for next fall just like we plan to do.  We have been emailing places locally and we have looked into all kinds of other options too (i.e. Louisville, destination weddings, etc.).

When we started our search we had a list of about 10 places in Cleveland.  After getting a good idea on rates and the different venue sizes we were able to narrow it down to about three of four places.  Holden Arboretum is one of our top local venues and it is located in Kirtland, Ohio.

Danny has been emailing the coordinator at Holden Arboretum back and forth for what seems like forever.  Sadly, they are so busy on the weekends with weddings that they were unable to book weekend tours until November. So Danny really couldn't go on a tour until that point because of work.

Since I am in worry mode about not finding a venue I decided that maybe mom and I could go and look at this place ASAP.  Thankfully I was able to set up kind of a last minute appointment with the coordinator, who is wonderful.  She is so helpful and she responds quickly to emails.

Wednesday morning I woke up early and I was slightly antsy about getting there and getting there on time.  When we finally got off the exit after our hour drive to the east side we instantly were surrounded by trees, little white fences that reminded me of something you would usually see in Kentucky, little barns, beautiful homes, and we even found hills! There are no hills in Ohio, it is super flat.  It was gorgeous! When we pulled up to the entrance we drove up to the visitor center (after passing it once and having to turn around) and checked in and let the coordinator know we were there.

We toured the Butterfly Garden first.  It is beautiful.  There are flowers everywhere.  There is a pond that has lily pads and a fountain in it.  The little bridge over the pond is so cute and there are benches all around the pond.  I took pictures like crazy.  This was the place I wanted to look at the most after looking at the website a billion times.  We looked at the garden, the visitor center, the tent lawn, and the building next to the garden that could be the back up place in case of rain or the place where the bridal party gets dressed before the ceremony.

Love the little benches and all the bright flowers

We then moved on to the Lantern Court area which was down the road from the Butterfly Garden.  It was completely different from the outdoor garden area.  The Lantern Court venue has a few different options for people to choose from.  What we would do probably is rent out the whole area so we could have access to the terrace area, the arcade and courtyard, and the house.  There is no comparison to the garden so deciding between the two will be difficult if this is our future wedding site.  Lantern Court is my mom's favorite of the two and I am still deciding which one I like more.

The coordinator was so great she told us we could come back any time.  We are even able to come back when they are setting up for a wedding so we can get a better idea of what it will look like.  Hopefully soon we can go back over there soon with Danny and his family.  We still have more places to tour but this one is for sure in the running.

Check out the venues website.  Here is the link to the photo gallery on the website.  The fall pictures are so pretty.  http://www.holdenarb.org/photogallery/

Question time!
How did you decide on your venue?  How long did it take you to find the right place?  How far in advanced did you book your venue? What are some things that people should know when deciding on their venue?
Please comment!!!

25 Gowns Down and Only One Survived!

I FOUND MY DRESS! Now a lot of you are probably thinking, "Whoa there did you jump the gun a little bit there?" or "You've only been engaged for a few days and you already have your dress?!?!"

Let me justify my reasoning behind dress shopping so early.  Back in high school when Danny was my prom date I was determined to find a dress that would be unique, flatter my figure, and one that I would absolutely love.  Do you know how long it took me to find that one dress that isn't even 1/4 as important as your wedding dress? I looked for about four months! It's a prom dress! I started at every mall around the west side and then even ventured over to the east side of town a few times.  I went to boutiques, bridal shops, I even looked online.  I just couldn't find a thing.  I finally went to Catan Fashions and I found it.  It wasn't what I thought I wanted but it was beautiful. I remember specifically telling my mom when we were purchasing my prom dress, "If looking for a prom dress was this big of a challenge I do not even want to think about how long it's going to take me to find a wedding dress." So that is why I started sooooo early!

I booked my appointments with two local bridal shops on Sunday afternoon over lunch with my mom.  Setting up the appointments from my iPhone probably wasn't the smartest thing to do but apparently it worked since I received confirmations e-mails within the hour of booking.  HOWEVER, just because a confirmation e-mail is sent, it doesn't mean that the store's e-mail account is working or that people even check their appointment bookings within the 24-48 hours they say they will.  I will get to that later.  I booked my first appointment for Tuesday at noon with Dora's Bridal and then a Wednesday appointment with Catan Fashions, also at noon.  Monday comes around, no response from either place.  Tuesday morning, I check my e-mail, still no confirmation.  At that point being the crazy person that I can be I was a little freaked out.  I remembered that Dora's didn't necessarily need an appointment set up in order to look at gowns so I just decided to head up there anyway.

My mom and I got to the store right when it opened so thankfully no one was there in case an appointment was booked, I wouldn't be getting in the way.  I walked in and told them I tried to make an appointment and there was no confirmation saying when my appointment actually was.  Apparently the store's e-mail account was down over the weekend.  Ladies, I feel that it is much easier to just call and set up an appointment because technology fails, multiple times, because this happened again.

Here is my confession.  I may have "accidentally" stumbled upon a few bridal websites over the past few months before I was engaged.  I may have glanced at a few oh maybe hundred dresses, just to see what was out there. I may have found about seven dresses that I already knew as soon as I got engaged that I wanted to try on the next week.  But hey if you have been dating a person for almost six years, I think you would do the same thing too.

I had a few pictures printed off of dresses that I had picked out online and went over them  with the sales associate.  She only had about two of the ones I wanted to try on.  One of them being what I thought was THE DRESS.  I tried on about six dresses at Dora's and the dress that I thought was THE ONE was just kind of ehh take it or leave it.  The other dresses weren't much better.  I did get a better idea of what flattered my figure and I found out what looked awful on me.

What I thought to be THE DRESS

Wednesday my mom and I were set to go to Catan Fashions.  Yet again, I had no confirmation e-mail saying when my appointment was.  Luckily, I was able to get a hold of someone over the phone to confirm that my appointment was set for noon that day.

My consultant for the day was a very helpful lady.  She greeted my mom and I very cheerfully and let us know where all the designers were located in the store.  She encouraged me to try on as many dresses as I wanted and even in styles that I didn't think would flatter me.  She was actually pretty funny because if she ever saw me look at a dress for longer than five seconds she would say, "Just try it!" One thing I really liked about Catan's was the fact that I had a large dressing room with two larger mirrors in it so I didn't have to go to the main room and show everyone my dress.  I had privacy to try on the gowns and it was more relaxed just being my mom, me, and the consultant.  We had pulled about 13 or 14 gowns to try on.  All of them were completely different from each other.  The first gown I tried on was an Allure Aline, lace gown with an empire waist and a sweetheart neckline.  I had actually printed out a picture of this gown but I didn't realize it until half-way through my appointment.  I was drawn to this dress instantly.  It was the right color and it had the lace and beading details that I thought I would want in a dress.

Front view with me in the dress...it's a little big

I went on to try on a few other gowns but nothing was really standing out.  Dresses would have certain details or cuts that I liked but nothing was really screaming this is my dress.  We took lots of pictures, and I guess I will embarrass myself by posting a few of them now.

We liked the waistline of this dress, but it was a lot of dress
We like the pretty detailing on the back of this dress, yet again, it was a big dress
This dress may look a little ridiculous the more I look at it.  But I liked it off the rack.
Back view of the ridiculous dress
Mom's pick...wasn't a fan of the fabric, but it had cute details

There were a lot more dresses that we tried but we didn't bother taking pictures because I immediately ruled them out after I tried on a dress that after a little time would be THE DRESS.  My dress was probably the fourth dress that I tried on.  I put it on and it fit well, it was the right color, it was light, cute, but still beautiful, and I was kind of attached to it.  I was told by the consultant to keep a set of top two or three dresses and compare the other ones I tried on to them.  I kept saying, "Nope, that's not it, I like the other two better." a lot after trying on the first and fourth dress.  We narrowed it down to two dresses and I tried them on again.  At that point I was pretty sure that I knew what dress I wanted.  Both of the dresses were COMPLETELY different from each other.  One was what I thought I wanted and the other was the total opposite of what I thought I wanted.

My dress was nothing what I imagined it to be.  It is a beautiful Allure gown and it even has POCKETS (perfect for my iPhone)!!!! It is taffeta (not lace), diamond white (not ivory), it has a strapless neckline (not a sweetheart), and it has a ballgown/ A-line skirt (not mermaid).  Because I know Danny will be looking at this I am not going to post any pictures of me in the dress or of the dress at all.  If you want to see it you can ask and I will be more than happy to send you a picture of it.

We left the store and I found another store that we could just walk into without an appointment that was on the other side of town.  Galleria Gowns is a smaller store that is just kind of go in, look at what's on the racks, and you can just throw it on.  I pulled about six more dresses when I was there.  While I was looking, I found my dress again, and I immediately got excited.  I had to try it on again.  I even found another Allure gown that was very similar to my dress but it has some beading detailing at the waistline that was absolutely gorgeous.  I tried on all the dresses and saved my dress for last.  The dresses I tried on were beautiful dresses with more detailing than any of the other dresses that I had previously tried.

Yet again I will embarrass myself some more. Man I wish my mom was a better photographer, or that she would at least tell me when she was taking pictures.

GORGEOUS...but not my dress. Oh and I didn't cut my head out of these pictures...mom did. Probably because I was making faces the majority of the time.
 Close but still not it

I would show you more of the dresses but I don't want to give any more away.  I was actually a little torn between the two similar Allure gowns.  That was before I tried on my gown again though.  I tried on my dress for one last time and as soon as I walked out to look at myself in the mirrors I was smiling and the consultant was telling me how flattering the dress was and how she could tell it was more my style of dress.  Then she pushed me overboard and put on the veil and that's when I started getting a little misty eyed.  I never thought I would get that overwhelming feeling where I would almost cry! I knew it was my dress.

We talked about some alterations, like adding some straps. Getting the dress hemmed and fitted. Ordering the dress, getting shoes and the right veil, and all that stuff for a bit.  It takes about six months to get a dress ordered and made so I didn't immediately purchase the dress.  But I cannot wait until I can go back and try it on again and get it fitted perfectly just for me!!

NOW I have some questions for those of you that have looked for dresses.  How many places did you look? Did you try on as many gowns as I did?  How did you know that was your dress?  When you got your dress altered did you have any issues?  Was it really pricey to get alterations done to your dress?  When you dress was finished being altered and ready for you to pick up were you happy with it?

I would love to hear about your experiences with your own dress shopping mission. Please comment!
